Adara Pakkaus Oy produces high-quality packaging and shelf-ready retail packaging. This includes sustainable production, from corrugated board to impeccable printing, using the latest flexo and digital printing techniques.

For consistent high quality, optimal working conditions and minimized energy use and waste, Adara deploys cleaning systems that remove an important source of waste and quality problems: dust, trim and microparticles. The results of these systems are monitored to assess their effect on production quality, cleaning requirements and working conditions.

Following the successful deployment of a Weducon web cleaner after the slitter/scorer, Adara expanded its BHS corrugator with additional Weducon HE-Series sheet cleaners in the cut-off section of the same machine.

Why sheet cleaning after the cut-off section?

Cleaning after the cut-off section has become an important requirement for producing clean, printable corrugated board, even when cleaning already takes place after the slitter/scorer.

This is mainly due to today’s use of serrated knives in the cut-off process. Although serrated knives have longer tool life than plain knives, they produce a fourfold increase in cutting dust. This dust enters the production environment and clings to the corrugated board. Removing it after the cut-off section helps prevent contamination of the printing units, where dust can contribute to waste, additional cleaning stops and print defects.

Since replacing a previous cleaning system in the slitter/scorer with a Weducon web cleaner had already doubled wash distances on the printing units, expectations were high for this additional cleaning stage.

Careful preparation once again ensured rapid installation in the BHS corrugator, without interrupting production or requiring undesirable modifications to the existing equipment.

Customer-reported measured results

Following several weeks of measurement after installation of the sheet cleaners in the cut-off section, Adara Pakkaus reported the following production results:

  • 40% reduction in dust measured at the Göpfert printing machine.
  • 46% reduction in production stops required for cleaning printing plates (clichés).

The impact of these results on daily production is summarized below by Adara Pakkaus’ Head of Printing, Lari Seppälä:

When we replaced an existing web cleaner between the slitter/scorer and drive-train with the Corrucleaner, it halved the time used in production for washing.

If cleaning after the cut-off is so effective, why still use a web cleaner after the slitter/scorer?

Removing dust directly at the source after the slitter/scorer remains important because it helps prevent:

  • Contamination of the production environment, resulting in additional cleaning work and energy use
  • Contamination and premature wear of bearings and switch boxes
  • Airborne dust in the production environment
  • Dust being forced into the substrate by the drive train after the slitter/scorer, making it more difficult to remove further downstream
