Dust- and fibre-free nonwoven production
Nonwovens are a web of material that has some similar characteristics as fabric, but also some considerable differences.
Nonwoven production methods
- Mechanic nonwoven production is similar to felt manufacturing. The process interlocks fibres with serrated needles, so that the inter-fibre friction results in a stronger fabric, with an adhesive or chemical binder.
- Thermal nonwoven production works by applying a binder and melting it onto the web by increasing temperature.
Due to the construction of the substrate, there are some significant dust sources when converting these webs. Specifically, the unwind generates a large volume of dust and loose fibres, as a layer of nonwoven that is pulled away from the core releases a lot of debris.
Removing dust and fibres in nonwoven production
In most nonwoven applications dust is unacceptable: nonwoven used in medical gowns, surgical drapes, masks, covers and wound-dressings has to be completely dust-free.
In nonwoven filters for air or fluids, such as water or coffee filters and tea-bags, dust and fibres are a major concern. Even in diaper stock and feminine hygiene products, the absence of loose particles and debris is a clear indication of quality.
Nonwoven web cleaning solutions
In several stages of nonwoven production and converting the use of an effective web cleaning solution is decisive to reach quality and hygiene standards.
Directly after the unwind station, the web cleaner catches generated debris before it becomes airborne and contaminates the production lines. After slitting and needle punching or felting, dust and fibres require removal as soon as possible.
