Clean and lint-free tissue production – a complicated task
Since tissue manufacturing generates considerable dust and lint, the production of absolutely clean tissue is a complex task.
Tissue manufacturing process
Tissue is either made of virgin or recycled paper pulp with relatively little refining to provide its soft, absorbent, and bulky quality.
Tissue products are further distinguished from other paper types in that they are ‘crĂŞped’, a process in which the paper is dried in a cylinder and then scraped off with a metal blade, giving it the typical crimping. This process not only softens the paper but also makes it weaker, which allows easy disintegration in water.
In the tissue manufacturing process, lint is found in several places. A lot of lint is embedded in the surface of the tissue’s web. A great deal of this lint is a by-product of the creping step.
As the web travels through the tissue reeling and rewinding operations, a boundary layer of air gets attached to each web surface. This boundary layer becomes contaminated with lint entrained in the airflow.
Finally, the environment in which the manufacturing operations take place adds a certain amount of environmental dust and lint.
Importance of web cleaning in tissue production
Effective web cleaning at crucial production stages of tissue manufacturing is essential. The immediate benefits are as follows:
- Prevents lint accumulation and minimizes air emission in the production environment.
- Improves customer satisfaction by delivering clean and healthy products.
- Enables high printing quality in napkins and other tissue products by removing lint and particles.
Facts & figures on tissue web cleaning
The large volume of lint in tissue production makes conventional web cleaning solutions with replaceable paper or synthetic filter bags useless. Since they clog rapidly, 100 % constant and reliable web cleaning is impossible with this kind of equipment.
Tissue and nonwoven filter
Weducon offers a unique filter range for tissue and nonwoven. The increased distance between filter plates results in low vertical speed in the filter housing. This prevents “nesting” of longer fibres in between the filter plates.
Reduction of energy use and complete dust removal
Weducon’s HE 90 Web Cleaner for tissue has an aerodynamic design that drastically reduces energy consumption. A further advantage is that the HE 90 Web Cleaner’s increased airspeed ensures the collection of particles in higher concentrations in only the dustbin.
Weducon offers advice based on over 30 years of experience. Our references guarantee that Weducon can determine the optimisation of your tissue production processes.
