Adara Pakkaus Oy produces high-quality packaging and shelf-ready retail packaging. This includes sustainable production, from corrugated board to impeccable printing, using the latest flexo and digital printing techniques.Â
For consistent high quality, optimal working conditions and minimized energy use and waste, Adara deploys cleaning systems that remove the most significant cause of waste and quality complaints: dust, trim and microparticles. The results of these systems are measured to gauge the effect on quality and health.
Following the successful deployment of a Weducon web cleaner after the slitter/scorer, Adara recently expanded its BHS corrugator with a new Weducon HE-Series sheet cleaner in the cut-off section of the machine.
Why sheet cleaning after the cut-off section?
Cleaning after the cut-off section has become a current requirement to produce clean, printable corrugated board, even if cleaning already takes place after the slitter/scorer.
This is mainly due to today’s use of serrated knives in the cut-off process. Although serrated knives have longer tool life than plain knives, they produce a fourfold increase in cutting dust. Dust that enters the production environment and clings to the corrugated board. Therefore, eliminating dust after the cut-off section is essential to avoid contamination of the printing units, which causes waste, additional cleaning stops and print defects.
Since replacing a previous cleaning system in the slitter/scorer with a Weducon web cleaner had already doubled wash distances on the printing units, expectations were high for this new additional installation.
Careful preparation once again ensured rapid installation in the BHS corrugator. Of course, without interrupting production and undesirable modifications to the existing equipment.
Results
After several weeks of measuring results from installing the sheet cleaner in the cut-off section, Adara reported the following improvements:
- Dust reduction on the Göpfert printing machine by 40%.
- 46% reduction in production stops for cleaning printing plates (clichés)
We can proudly say that both the customer and ourselves are happy with this positive impact on production, quality and working conditions.
If cleaning after the cut-off is so effective, why still use a web cleaner after the slitter/scorer?
The answer is that removing dust directly at the source prevents:
- Contamination of the production environment, which results in extra cleaning work and energy use
- Contamination and premature wear of bearings and switch boxes
- Airborne dust and, therefore unhealthy strain on the lungs
- Difficult to remove dust that has been forced into the substrate after the slitter/scorer by the drive train
